Resilience
Our vision for the 2021 ECA conference is to engage “Resilience” thoughtfully as a persistent response to overcoming obstacles, thriving despite challenges, and adapting to an ever-changing global landscape. This conference is a fully on-line, virtual experience that will feature a variety of offerings and opportunities, including panel/paper sessions, short courses, research workshops, and keynote presentations. Conference attendees can also participate in special programming highlighting the areas of “Resilient Teaching,” “Resilient Research,” and “Resilient Academic Leadership.”

Communication Quarterly Editor Nominations
ECA members are invited to submit nominations or self-nominations for Editor-elect of Communication Quarterly, 2022-2025 (Vols. 71-73). All candidates who meet the membership requirements set forth in the ECA Constitution, Article III and the Bylaws, Article IV, are eligible to apply.
Communication Quarterly is published five times per year. As ECA’s flagship journal, Communication Quarterly has been edited by 19 scholars from around the nation, and continues to publish the finest quality research in the Communication discipline.
The following will be considered when assessing qualifications of nominees.
Considered Criteria:
- Research Experience
- Editorial experience (prior editorships, guest editing, review board member, manuscript reviewer, etc.)
- Project management experience and outcomes
- Vision for the journal
- Demonstrated leadership experience
- Ability to create a support team
Incoming editors are expected to attend a workshop funded by Taylor and Francis prior to the start of their term. Nomination materials should include:
- A letter of application addressing the following:
- Leadership experience and outcomes
- Vision for the journal/Content direction
- How equity, diversity, and inclusion will be achieved
- Plan for support team development
- Copy of current CV
- A letter of institutional support (IS) or candidate’s plan for editing without IS
- Plans for use of the editor’s stipend
- Three letters of recommendation

Invitation to a Special Virtual Presentation from WSCA: Where Do We Go from Here? Attention and Action for Current Times

Although we have postponed our 2021 WSCA Annual Convention, we nonetheless remain engaged with our membership and with the discipline in a number of ways this year. We invite all members of NCA to take part in a Zoom presentation and discussion with our planned WSCA 2021 Keynote Speaker, Verónica Reyes, as part of that ongoing engagement.
Reyes’ identity as a butch, Chicana feminist lesbian is the frame through which she explores themes of environment, family, race, and sexuality to develop a felt understanding of life in East L.A (the originally planned site of our 2021 convention). As a “people’s poet,” Reyes gives voice to the depth and richness of intersecting communities, and her evocative work has been recognized and supported through numerous grants, fellowships, and awards (including the Astraea Lesbian Foundation Emerging Artist Award and the 2014 International Latino Book Award for Best Poetry). Reyes’ poems have been published in a range of outlets, from Feminist Studies to The New York Quarterly to Ms. Magazine, as well as in an award-winning collection in her book Chopper, Chopper: Poetry from Bordered Lives.
In this presentation, Reyes will reflect on how her writing gives voice to those who experience multiple oppressions in the United States today due to borders developed physically, geographically, emotionally, and nationally because of racism, sexism, heterosexism, and classism. Reyes will reflect on the narratives in her poetry that defiantly cultivate vibrance and delight in many of our areas of focus in Communication Studies, including the relational, the environmental, the political, and the geographical. In considering Communication Studies themes through the lens of poetry, Reyes will offer us new ways to consider our areas of research, and through her expertise as a creative writer, she will emphasize opportunities for us to cultivate creativity and passion in our own work.
